Short Review :
Ray Porter did another fantastic job narrating this one! Personally, I felt like And Then She Vanished leaned more toward fantasy than science fiction. Of course, there's no single way to explain how time travel works, but I think Blake Crouch's Recursion did a better job with the whole time travel concept. That said, I really enjoyed the humor in this book—it was perfectly placed and added a nice touch!
Long Review :
Joseph Bridgeman, the main character, is stuck in a pretty messy life—drowning in debt and struggling with insomnia ever since he lost his sister, Amy, at a fair 23 years ago. Not only did he lose her that day, but it also felt like he lost his whole family. And Then She Vanished kicks off in 2019, with Joe still dealing with financial problems since his business is in a slump. His accountant, Martin, suggests he see a hypnotherapist named Alexia, and that's when Joe accidentally discovers his ability to time travel. At first, Joe thinks he's losing his mind, but he soon realizes it’s real and starts to see it as a way to save Amy. One reason I’d consider this more fantasy than sci-fi is Joe’s other ability: connecting with objects. He has visions (which he calls "viewings") that let him see the past linked to those objects. He ends up using this skill to travel back to key moments in time.
Overall, I liked the plot, but as I mentioned in my quick review earlier, I thought Blake Crouch's Recursion did a better job of making time travel feel more believable and thought-out. The narration, though, was spot on, as always, with Ray Porter delivering it at just the right pace and capturing all the emotions perfectly. When the narration is this good, it really helps you feel connected to the story and visualize each scene.
